Godhood in Eternus is not forever. In the history of time, there have been two reality-shifting events, known as Agons, where gods became mortal and killable. If a god is killed in this state, its powers are transferred on to its murderer. Now, only three of the original gods remain, being Lathander, Pölark, and Titania. Current Gods are entities which hold an Animus, the soul of a god from which they gain their divine power. There are twelve anima in existence, each held by one of The Twelve Who Came Before, or the original gods.

The First Agon

When the Agon began, the first god to be killed was Typhon. This was due to the fact that Clio Sara, the god hunter, had on her side the only person ever known in history to have been able to predict an Agon precisely, Aureon Mentis (The Oracle of Sara). Knowing that this was going to happen, Sara and her hunters set a trap for the opportune moment to strike, leading the Predator to the town of Chimaera before killing it. Following the discovery that gods were not only mortal, but could be killed, three more gods were slain. In retaliation for starting the Blood War—and as a way to end it—Archangel Asmodeus murdered the Sanguine Lord, leading to him being cast down from the Heavens by Lathander. Seeking the power to raise an army of undead, the Demonlord Orcus travelled to Pandemonium to fight and kill The Shepherd, giving him access to the Veil and magic of undeath. In doing so, the Veil was left unguarded, making arcane magic and resurrection possible, and inadvertently starting the Golden Age. Finally, in an act of betrayal the scheming elder dragon Fafnir attacked Urvox, killing it with the power of his voice.

The Second Agon

The Second Agon began around 800 years later.

The Rending

The Rending was an event that occurred 214 years after the Second Agon. While not technically being an Agon, it still had the effect of turning all gods at the time mortal. If a god was killed during the Rending, the original primordial god of its animus would return. This happened when Gruumsh was killed, leading to Octavian returning. The Piper caused a reign of terror in the Sara Dominion for a while, before being slain by Týr Sara who dispersed his animus, which revived Gruumsh as a god once more.
